With his capacity to comprehend complex matters, it should be no surprise that Toby Loakes initially studied to become an actuary. However, Toby realised early on that he’d be better suited to a career with a more personal focus, and as a result spent the last 20 years developing his skills as an investment adviser. With his sharp analytical mind and eye for detail, Toby is particularly skilled in selecting the right investments for his clients, spending hours filtering global databases to find the best opportunities on offer.
Toby initially studied Advanced Mathematics and Computing at Monash University, before studying Actuarial Science. Deciding to pursue a front office role, he joined Deutsche Bank and received valuable support in getting started as an investment adviser (achieving his Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment, and Accredited Derivatives Adviser Levels 1 and 2 along the way). After working at Barclays Global Investors London, he returned to Australia and worked at Merrill Lynch before joining UBS Wealth Management in 2001. In 2016, Toby joined a group of like-minded peers to form Crestone, an employee-owned wealth management firm.
At LGT Wealth Management, Toby employs a multi-asset class approach, running a US and European direct stock portfolio that has consistently outperformed the indexes. Comfortable discussing issues such as structuring and tax, Toby often works collaboratively with his clients’ accountants to ensure their assets are in the most tax-effective and protective structures possible. In addition, he communicates with clients daily, keeping them up-to-date with research and investment thematics both within Australia and abroad.
