The Hungarian painter Károly Markó was born in Locse (now Levoca) in present-day Slovakia. He travelled to Vienna, later settling in Rome and Florence. The Italianate Landscape in the Evening Sun is typical of the paintings produced during his time in Italy. The Arcadian mood and the gentle sunlight echo works of the leading representatives of the 17th-century artists, Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain, but also reveal the influence of the successive generation of landscape painters in Rome.
In a spreading landscape, children and women accompanied by goats and carrying musical instruments and sheaves of corn seem to be wending their way home from their work in the fields. At the centre of the picture the river descends over a small waterfall, while further back a classical ruin emphasises the harmonious composition of the idealised landscape. Signed and dated by the artist, this work was re-acquired by Prince Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein for the Princely Collections in 2009.
